Back in the Habitat
Wilhelm was privileged to partner with Habitat for Humanity to build a home in Indianapolis to benefit a single mother of three children on Howard Street. Carmen Hatcher always dreamed of owning her own home, and Wilhelm helped make it happen.
Alexa Popcheff, Volunteer Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity, said F.A. Wilhelm Construction Company was one of nine companies in the Indianapolis area to provide the home building assistance.
“This means Wilhelm staff were on the build site each day to oversee construction and provide expertise when needed,” Popcheff said. “Wilhelm also secured and paid for all of the contract work necessary to complete the home, such as labor for electrical, plumbing, roofing install, drywall and flooring.”
Benjamin Veenhuizen, Wilhelm project engineer, managed the subcontractors for the 1,400 square-foot, 4-bedroom, and 1.5-bath home. With the help of Eli Lilly volunteers, Wilhelm broke ground and began framing the home mid-September. Either Veenhuizen or fellow Wilhelm employee Jim Stanich were on site to help guide volunteers and provide technical expertise.
“In addition to Wilhelm, DEEM, Industrial Electric, Inc., Williams Comfort Air, The Blakely Corporation, Interior Specialties Inc., and R. Adams Roofing Inc. donated time to Habitat,” Veenhuizen said. “Materials were either donated or provided by Habitat for Humanity.”
Wilhelm coordinated the framing, trusses and roof decking, roofing, plumbing, HVAC and electrical, drywall, painting, cabinets, doors and interior trim.
Popcheff said partnerships with companies like F.A. Wilhelm are essential to Habitat’s work in the greater Indianapolis area.
“The partnership with Wilhelm allows Habitat to more effectively provide a quality, affordable home to our homeowners,” Popcheff said. “Participation by companies like Wilhelm shows our homeowners that this community cares about them and supports their journey toward a better future for their family.”
Homeowner Carmen Hatcher had the keys to her new home in her hands just in time for Thanksgiving.
“I got into Habitat to better our lives,” Hatcher said. “Being a homeowner has always been a dream of mine and Habitat is helping make it come true. I want a home and a foundation for my kids.”
