Louisville, Kentucky. The Speed Art Museum announces the selection of F.A. Wilhelm Construction Co., Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana as general contractor for the Museum's upcoming renovation and expansion. Wilhelm will work closely with wHY Architecture of Los Angeles and K. Norman Berry Associates Architects of Louisville.
On the appointment of Wilhelm, Director Charles Venable said, "We are pleased to be partnering with such a strong general contractor from our region who has a great deal of experience working with museums. During the interview process they demonstrated their understanding of the complexities of museum buildings and familiarity with the construction market in Louisville, both of which will be an advantage in moving this project forward."
The firm has an extensive history working with museums including the major expansion of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, and the Indiana State Museum. Projects in Louisville are comprised of the concrete construction on Papa John’s Stadium, the new Downtown Arena, and the parking garage at Louisville International Airport. Additionally, Wilhelm has served as construction manager and general contractor for complicated institutional, commercial, and industrial building projects in Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois.
"We are pleased to have been selected by the Speed as its construction partner to bring new life and dimension to the Museum’s urban complex. We will apply our staff’s experience in museum construction budgeting, scheduling and logistics in helping the Speed achieve its unique vision of bringing great art and people together," said Phil Kenney, President of Wilhelm Construction.
The Masterplan for the building and concept designs for the expansion will be shown to Museum members and the public on May 8th as part of a forum Changing Speed: A Community Forum on the New Museum. To reserve your ticket to the community program, email architecture@speedmuseum.org.
