Glick Eye Institute and IUPUI Gateway Garage are ACI winners for Wilhelm

Two recent Wilhelm projects on the IUPUI campus were honored with Outstanding Achievement in Concrete awards from the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Eye Institute won in ACI’s Healthcare/Life Sciences category, and the IUPUI Gateway Garage was honored with a Parking award.

The Glick Eye Institute includes an adult outpatient clinic, ophthalmology classroom and an optical shop.  A concrete structure - a Wilhelm specialty – was used to build the four-story building to ensure that vibration won’t be a problem for sensitive optical research equipment.  The building also has an architectural precast concrete cladding and precast concrete site walls.

Wilhelm formed and poured the 77,417 square foot concrete structure within a five month span from January 2009 through May of 2010.  Interior concrete columns and beams are exposed finish in many areas which required extra coordination and labor.

The “Gateway Garage” is well-named.  It is a 1,300 car structure that greets drivers as they enter IUPUI driving west on Michigan Street.  Wilhelm was general contractor for the five story, cast-in-place, post-tensioned parking structure with precast and metal panel facade, three stair towers and two elevators.

Wilhelm poured 13,700 cubic yards of concrete and performed 46,635 man hours in eight months to have the garage open to students for the August 2010 semester.

Prior to new construction, Wilhelm had to relocate a gas main, electrical duct bank, storm and sanitary sewer lines, and a water main.  To keep campus disruption to a minimum, Wilhelm ran the new duct across Michigan Street during the 2009 winter break.

Congratulations to all who participated in these great projects.  And thanks to ACI for recognizing their work!
