Wilhelm Construction wins awards for Regions Tower & The Nature Conservancy

Work on two prominent downtown projects won awards for F.A. Wilhelm Construction Company of Indianapolis.  Renovation of the Regions Tower and construction of The Nature Conservancy of Indiana headquarters were selected for merit awards in Midwest Construction magazine’s Best of 2010 competition.

Wilhelm replaced the exterior glass skin of the Regions Tower after it was heavily damaged by a spring storm in 2006.  Working with architectural plans from Gensler & Associates of Chicago, Wilhelm ironworkers built a steel frame around the entire 36-story building to hold new double-paned, UV resistant windows.  Wilhelm is currently removing the old exterior windows from the inside.

The Nature Conservancy headquarters, known as the Efroymson Conservation Center, is designed by Axis Architects as energy self-sufficient.  Wilhelm built the modern structure using recycled brick, Indiana limestone and lumber harvested from Indiana property managed by the Conservancy.  Natural light reaches every room.  Geothermal tubes buried in the ground provide heating and cooling.  And a rainwater collection system uses water in the building or allows it to leach into the ground.  It never flows into the city’s overburdened storm sewers.

Larry Roan, Wilhelm’s vice president for Business Development, says, “It’s an honor to be recognized by Midwest Construction.  Many companies worked with us on Regions Tower and The Nature Conservancy, and these awards raise the visibility of all their efforts.”
