Hypersonics & Applied Research Facility
West Lafayette, IN
The Hypersonics and Applied Research Facility (HARF) project was brand-new construction of a 65,000 SF structure accommodating a research lab, classrooms, storage, and machine shop. The 40,000 SF research lab required additional considerations to meet the specifications required to house and operate a Hypersonics Pulse shock tunnel (HYPULSE) and a Mach 8 wind tunnel. Additionally, the building included a secured compartment information facility.
The HARF project scope also included the advance engineering materials suite allowing for the processing and characterization of materials to be tested in the research laboratory. The office space accommodated space for students and faculty conducting research in the wind tunnel. Special design considerations were included with the machine shop location to be in close proximity to the testing facility as well as storage of testing models. Additional scope also included a high-pressure air, nitrogen, and helium piping necessary to operate the wind tunnel.
