Purdue University Combined Heat & Power Facility

Wilhelm and ICT engineered, procured, and constructed a Combined Heat and Power facility (CHP) in West Lafayette for Duke Energy. The power generated from this system will be directed to the utility’s distribution system, with the steam will complementing Purdue University’s campus steam system.

The CHP system consists of a 15.5 megawatt (MW) combustion turbine generator with a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) and a duct burner for supplemental firing of gas to increase the production of steam. The HRSG can produce 150,000 lb/hr of superheated steam at 600 psig and 775°F.  The system is configured with a diverter damper and bypass stack to allow the generation of power independent of steam generation when necessary. The system is housed in a new building which includes offices, restrooms/lockers, a breakroom, control room, IT room, and low voltage and medium voltage switchgear rooms to support CHP operations.

The plant also includes a condensate storage system along with a new deaerator and boiler feed-water pumps, and is connected to the thermal host’s existing auxiliary systems for condensate return and make-up water
