Indianapolis International Airport

F.A. Wilhelm Construction served as both the general and trade contractor for the Indianapolis Airport project. Our responsibilities included self-performing the concrete and steel construction for the concourse, the concrete construction for the terminal, the 2.7M, 7,500-car parking structure, and the concrete construction for the underground deicing reservoir. The state-of-the-art parking structure features moving walkways to transport travelers through a central atrium to the airport terminal’s ticketing hall, ATM-like ticketing kiosks to expedite the process, and an electronic mapping system to guide motorists to available parking spaces.
With accumulating snow and ice, the parking structure canopy was not able to withstand the weight and provided safety concerns for the public. The safest solution was to replace the canopy and reinforce it with additional steel trusses. This project had to be completed without significantly impacting access to all five levels of the parking structure. To maximize time and cost efficiency, Wilhelm innovatively disassembled and reassembled a $5M crane to work under the canopy instead of on top of it. This solution minimized inconvenience to airport staff and travelers and reduced the project’s original estimated time, saving the client $850,000.
